I hope you are doing well spiritually and physically. Now that our state is gradually opening up again, I hope you enjoy the restored freedoms, while taking cautious measures against being infected.
It is my hope that these devotions are helpful spiritually.
Weekly Devotion #7
In his book, The Screwtape Letters, theologian C.S. Lewis writes this prophetic passage in 1942 in response to the effects of WWII. It seems to be very appropriate for today’s battle against the Corona Virus pandemic, as well as the current racial riots.
“Satan: “I will cause anxiety,
fear, and panic.
I will shut down business, schools,
places of worship and sports events.
I will cause economic turmoil.”
Jesus: “I will bring together neighbors,
Restore the family unit.
I will bring dinner back
to the kitchen table.
I will help people slow down their lives
And appreciate what really matters.
I will teach my children to rely on Me
and not their money and material possessions.”
Whether we are in the middle of a virus pandemic or a race riot, Satan would like for us to think that God is absent, uncaring, or powerless. The truth is that God is still at work in the world. We simply need to look more deeply.
God is present in those who try to maintain peaceful demonstrations. He is working through those who are trying to figure out a constructive plan of “where do we go from here?” God is working through the creative minds doing research for a Covid vaccine. God is using this time of being shut in to purify the air, restore animal habitats, and clean our polluted waters. Neighbors are becoming acquainted and families forced to be together are finding new ways of relating to one another in close quarters.
Isaiah 43:18-19 18″Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. 19See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.
Wishing you the very best,
Pastor Bruce
